In 2010, the world watched as 33 Chilean miners were rescued after 69 days below the earth’s surface. They survived on a tiny daily meal and a simple prayer: “Lord, we aren’t the best of men, but have pity on us.”
When Jesus approached Matthew at this tax collector’s booth, he made the rescue of a lifetime. “Follow me.” Come, Matthew. Be with me, be like me, do what I do.
Not all of our life’s disasters are deep dark mines, but we all need rescue. Matthew – the hated traitor – was just one invitation away from following Jesus. Who in our world just needs to be invited?
We can all join Jesus in his little meal – some bread, some wine – and have that same prayer echoed and answered, “Lord, have mercy.”
